Robin’s story to run her first ever marathon began early November of 2011. Three months into her training she was hit with an injury that in the end has taught her many humbling things – most of all that God is in control.
Knowing that running a full 26.2 miles was probably not attainable, she chose a new focus: running as far as she could in the Cowtown Marathon. In essence, she became a “spectator” within the race itself. It wasn’t about getting a great finish time or a medal at the end. It was about enjoying the race and the people in it. She knew that every runner had a story and she heard several of those stories while running along the way. Her pain began as she crossed the starting line, but her pain was nothing compared to some of the stories shared with her by other runners. Some had been trying for years just to complete a marathon.
Robin, being a photographer at heart (and in real life too), couldn’t help but take pictures along the way. She bought an inexpensive, battery operated, CVS digital camera so she could capture the race from another perspective – the perspective of a runner. I (Dale) also took pictures along the marathon route and we put them together in the video we are sharing with you below. I decided to see if I could find her running along the way and so I went to the 20 mile mark. I waited and watched along with other spectators and eventually saw her barely walking around the bend in the road. She smiled at me and said, “Wow! What a wonderful journey! Let’s go home!”

The downtown Fort Worth Starbucks was at the 9 1/2 mile mark for the Cowtown Marathon. I must say that this was my favorite part of the marathon – standing outside of Starbucks, drinking my mocha and watching the runners. I think I could do a marathon every weekend…I felt no pain standing there watching as the runners passed me by.
The truth is, I really admire all the people who trained for and ran in the marathon. It took them months to prepare and they came from all walks of life. I realize for some, the marathon is a competition. But for many of the people who run, it is about accomplishment; about doing something that very few people have done. To us non-runners, it is hard to imagine running this far and when we see the pain that people go through after the finishline, we really don’t understand. However, most runners get more out of this experience than we could ever imagine and it is a testament to the human spirit. Many runners go on to do it more than once. Great stories come from these experiences.
Later in the race I was at the 20 mile mark where crowds of people stood cheering for the runners. One particiular family had these signs to help encourage the runners along.
Ok, I realize this probably isn’t much encouragement, however, it is true – there will be pain. Wow…20 miles is a long way to run. I heard people in the crowd cheering for the runners, “You’re almost done! You can do it!” True, they were almost done at this point, but they still had 6 miles to go and for many this means another hour of running. When you’re tired and sore, that is a long way to run.
I want to say CONGRATULATIONS to all the runners, especially my wife, Robin. Whether you did the half marathon, full marathon or the ultra marathon – you are an INSPIRATION to me!

Here is an image I (Dale) shot while waiting for the start of the Cowtown Marathon yesterday (February 26). It was an almost perfect day for those running in the half marathon, marathon and ultra marathon. There was a little bit of wind to deal with, but all in all a great morning. Hard to believe that people would run farther than 26.2 miles, but the ultra marathons actually ran 31 miles! Wow! Congratulations to everyone. There will be more pictures to follow.

Despite working through injury for several weeks, Robin was able to get to the 20 mile mark at the Cowtown Marathon. She enjoyed running through downtown Fort Worth, interacting with all the people and taking some pictures along the way. Now it is time to rest, recover and think about the future. Thank you to everyone who kept Robin in your prayers throughout this process. The fundraising for Charity Water to build a water well will continue through the end of March so if you would like to donate, go to http://www.mycharitywater.org/robinweertsmarathon. Thanks again everyone…hopefully we will post some pictures of the event soon!

Robin Running for H2O in the Cowtown Marathon
As many of you already know, Robin is running in the Cowtown Marathon in downtown Fort Worth this weekend. During the course of her training she injured her left leg and has been working through this injury for the past five weeks. There was a moment where it looked like she wouldn’t be able to run in the marathon. The good news is, that after consulting with many doctors and a sports trainer, she is back on track.

However, she was not fully able to prepare for this marathon and has decided to run the half marathon…still 13.1 miles which is farther than I can think. When she started training for the marathon she also wanted it to have a purpose and decided to raise money to help build a water well in a place where people do not have access to clean water. She chose Charity Water as the organization to work with and has been raising funds towards this goal. We would like to invite you to participate in the building of this well by giving you the opportunity to donate at http://www.mycharitywater.org/robinweertsmarathon. To date, Robin has raised close to $1,000 and we are hoping to break the $1,000 barrier before the marathon on Sunday! Here is a video I put together for Robin as she took on this challenge. Hope you enjoy!
